Hangman word generator
Press Deal and this hangman word generator picks a random word and keeps it secret from everybody in the room, which removes the game's oldest problem: the person choosing the word. Guess a letter at a time on the board below, or tap Show me the word if you are playing on paper.
Pick a category first, from easy words for a six-year-old to the brutal set built out of J, Q, X and Z. Choose six wrong guesses for the classic game or ten if you want to draw the gallows too.
PRESS DEAL FOR A WORD
Pick a category, press Deal, and guess a letter at a time. Nobody has to think of a word, so nobody can pick an unfair one.

How does the hangman word generator work?
Choose a category and press Deal. The word arrives already hidden, shown as one dash per letter, and the letter tray runs A to Z beneath it. A correct guess fills in every place that letter appears; a wrong one draws the next part of the figure. Physical keyboards work as well as taps, which matters when the game is up on a classroom projector and the guesses are coming from the back of the room.
The hidden part is the point. In a normal game somebody has to think of a word, and that person then knows the answer, cannot play, and is quietly tempted to pick something nobody could ever get. Handing that job to a generator puts everyone on the same side of the puzzle. Call it a hangman generator, a hangman game words generator, a hangman generator words tool or a hangman creator: it is the same screen and the same hand-checked banks.
Used as a plain random word generator for hangman it is deliberately fussy about its pool. A generic word list will happily hand you something with two accepted spellings, and an argument about whether it is yogurt or yoghurt ends a round worse than losing does. Every word here has one spelling that everybody at the table can agree on afterwards.
Word generator for hangman: what makes a word fair?
Difficulty in this game is not about how clever the word is, it is about which letters are in it. A word is hard when it hides from the letters people guess first, and people guess vowels and the common consonants first, in almost exactly the order those letters appear in written English.
So the banks are graded by letter composition rather than by vibes. The easy set is short and built from common letters. The good set adds one awkward letter each, which is enough to make a round interesting without making it unwinnable. The hardest set stacks rare letters and repeats them, which is why a four-letter word can beat a fifteen-letter one.
- Rare letters: J, Q, X and Z each appear in under a quarter of one percent of written English, so a word carrying two of them is brutal.
- Repeated letters: a word with fewer distinct letters gives the guesser fewer chances to be right.
- Vowel count: one vowel means one easy win for the guesser instead of three.
- Length: longer words look frightening and are usually easier, because there is more room for common letters to land.
- Spelling agreement: anything with two accepted spellings is out, whatever its letters look like.
Can you play hangman online with this generator?
Yes, and it is worth being precise about how. This is a pass-and-play game on one screen rather than a multiplayer lobby: there is no room code, no account and no second device, because there is no server behind any of it. One person holds the phone or one laptop drives the projector, and everybody else shouts letters.
That trade is deliberate. Everything runs inside the browser that opened the page, so the game keeps working when the wifi drops, on a plane, or in a classroom with the network locked down. There is no app to install either: the page is the app, and adding it to a home screen gives you the same thing without the download.
If you would rather play on paper, which most people still do, press Show me the word. The generator hands the word over, you write the dashes out by hand, and the round carries on the way it has since long before any of this existed.
What categories does the hangman generator include?
Seventeen banks, 710 words, all hand-checked for one agreed spelling. Pick one to keep a game themed, or leave it on Everything for a deck that never settles into a rhythm:
| CATEGORY | WORDS | DIFFICULTY | BEST FOR |
|---|---|---|---|
| Easy | 45 | Easy | Short, common, and built from common letters. Nobody loses their first game. |
| For kids | 45 | Easy | Ages 5 to 10: words a child can spell back to you once the round is over. |
| Good words | 60 | Medium | The sweet spot: one awkward letter each, still solvable. The default pick. |
| Animals | 40 | Medium | Long enough to be interesting, familiar enough that nobody argues about it. |
| Food and drink | 40 | Medium | Everyone can spell what they eat, which keeps the arguments to a minimum. |
| Objects | 40 | Medium | Household things. Concrete nouns are the fairest words in the game. |
| School | 35 | Medium | Classroom words for a projector: subjects, places, and the school day. |
| Sports | 30 | Medium | Games and events. Loud rounds, and a category a whole room can shout at. |
| Places | 35 | Medium | Geography and buildings, all common nouns, so no proper-noun arguments. |
| Hard | 60 | Hard | Awkward spellings and rare letters, but every one is a word people know. |
| Long words | 30 | Hard | Eleven letters and up. They look terrifying and are secretly the fairest. |
| Hardest | 40 | Brutal | The killers: rare letters, repeated letters, and almost no vowels to find. |
| Funny | 45 | Hard | Words that get a laugh the second the last letter lands. The party bank. |
| For adults | 45 | Hard | Grown-up life, still clean: work, money, and the admin nobody warned you about. |
| Phrases | 45 | Hard | Whole sayings. Word gaps are given away free, which changes the whole game. |
| Books, films and songs | 40 | Hard | Titles chosen for spelling rather than plot. Shared knowledge does the work. |
| Christmas | 35 | Medium | The December bank: decorations, dinner, and everything under the tree. |
Where can you read the hangman words as a list?
Every word this generator deals is also published as a plain list you can read, copy or print without dealing a single one. The main set of hangman words covers the everyday categories, the good hangman words page holds the sweet-spot set that makes the best rounds, and the hard hangman words list is what to reach for when a group has got too good.
For the words that beat almost everybody there is a page of hardest hangman words with the letter maths behind each one, and for a party the funny hangman words set is written to get a laugh the second the last letter lands. Playing with whole sayings instead of single words? The hangman phrases list has 85 of them.
And if the argument is about the rules rather than the words, how to play hangman settles it, including the order to guess your letters in and why it works.
Fair questions
- How do you use the hangman word generator?
- Pick a category, press Deal, and a random word appears as dashes with nobody having seen it. Guess letters by tapping the tray or typing them; correct letters fill in, wrong ones draw the figure. Press Next word to keep going, or Show me the word if you are playing on paper.
- Is the hangman generator free?
- Yes, completely, with no signup, no account and no limit on how many words you deal. It also keeps working offline once the page has loaded, because the words ship with the page instead of being fetched from a server.
- How many hangman words does the generator include?
- 710 across seventeen categories, from a short easy set for young children to a brutal bank built out of J, Q, X and Z. Words are drawn and removed, so one cannot repeat until its category is exhausted, and the counter tells you how many are left.
- Are the hangman words really random?
- Yes. Each word is drawn using crypto.getRandomValues, the browser's cryptographic random number generator, with rejection sampling so every remaining word is exactly as likely as every other. Nothing is weighted and nothing is fetched.
- Can I use it for a hangman game on paper?
- That is what the Show me the word button is for. The generator picks the word so that no player has to, you copy the dashes onto paper, and the game runs as normal. It is the fairest way to play, because the person who would otherwise choose the word gets to guess as well.
- How many wrong guesses should hangman allow?
- Six is the classic count, one for each part of the figure, with the gallows already drawn. Ten is the generous version where the base, post, beam and rope each cost a guess first. Both are offered here, and the choice changes the difficulty far more than the word does.
