Hard hangman words are not unusual words, they are words built from unusual letters. A word is hard when it hides from the letters people guess first, which is why awkward and short beats impressive and long almost every time.

Here are 90 of them: 60 awkward spellings carrying rare letters, and 30 long words that look far worse than they play. The second list exists to make a point that changes how you choose words forever.

What makes a hangman word hard?

Four things, and only one of them is what people expect. Rare letters, because J, Q, X and Z each turn up in well under one percent of written English and almost nobody spends a guess on them. Repeated letters, because a word with four distinct letters gives the guesser four chances rather than seven. Few vowels, because vowels are the free information every guesser opens with. And spelling that fights the sound of the word, so knowing what it is does not tell you how it looks.

Notice what is missing from that list: obscurity. A word nobody knows is not hard, it is unwinnable, and losing to a word you have never heard of is not a defeat anybody enjoys. Every word below is one a general room recognizes. The difficulty is entirely in the letters.

No, and it is the most useful thing on this page. A long word contains more letters, which means it contains more common letters, which means the guesser's first five ordinary guesses fill in more of the board rather than less. Congratulations is fifteen letters long and only nine of them are distinct: guess the vowels and you are most of the way home.

The measurements make it plain. Below are six long words and six short ones, and the column that matters is the distinct-letter count. A short word with four distinct letters gives the guesser four chances to be right in a whole alphabet of choices:

How hard is too hard?

There is a simple test, and it takes ten seconds. Write the word out, cross off every letter in E T A O I N S R H L, and look at what is left. If more than half the word survives, it is a hard word. If the whole word survives, you have written something nobody will ever guess and the round will end in a shrug.

The other half of the answer is not about the word at all. Six wrong guesses is the classic count and it is brutal against words like these; ten turns the same list into a fair fight. If your group is losing every round, add lives before you soften the words. Difficulty you can dial is better than difficulty you have to rewrite.
