Pictionary word generator: deal a word, start the clock

Press DEAL and this pictionary generator hands you a random word face down, so you can turn the screen away from the guessers before you read it. Tap to reveal, the 60-second clock starts, and you draw. Pick a category first (animals, objects, actions, hard mode, phrases, or everything at once), then hit GUESSED IT or PASS to deal the next card.

There are 690 words across 16 categories, and every one was chosen because a rough sketch of it is recognizable. Once the page has loaded it keeps working with the wifi off, which is the whole point on a road trip or at a restaurant table.

How does the pictionary word generator work?

Choose a category, then press DEAL. The card arrives face down on purpose: pictionary is the one drawing game where exactly one person at the table may see the word, and a card that appears already revealed spoils the round the moment you pass the phone. Turn the screen away, tap to reveal, and the clock starts on your tap rather than on the deal.

The word is drawn using your browser's cryptographic random source, so every word in the category has exactly the same chance and nobody can steer the deck toward the easy ones. It is then removed for the rest of the round, which means no repeats until you have played the whole category, and the counter under the buttons says how many are left. When a category empties, the deck reshuffles and tells you so rather than quietly repeating itself.

Call it a pictionary generator, a pictionary words generator, a random pictionary generator or a pictionary generator words tool: it is the same screen and the same hand-checked banks. Used as a plain random word generator, pictionary is simply the game it was tuned for.

That tuning is the whole difference. As a random word generator for pictionary it is deliberately fussy about its pool, because a generic pictionary random word generator, or a random pictionary word generator dressed up as one, hands you a noun with no shape, and a word nobody can sketch is not a hard round, it is a dead one. The random pictionary words this one deals come only from things a person can actually put on paper, so the random words for pictionary you get are always playable.

What does the card category on each card mean?

The physical board game prints a letter in the corner of every card, and players navigate by it: P for a person, place or animal, O for an object, A for an action, D for difficult, and AP for an all-play round where every team draws at once. This generator carries the same letter on the card face, so a group that already knows the board game does not have to relearn anything.

Each category below declares which of the five card types its words behave like. That is a property of the whole bank rather than a guess made per word, which keeps the label honest.

Pictionary phrase generator: drawing whole sayings

Single nouns get solved fast by a good table. Phrases do not, which is why the phrase bank exists as a real set of 45 idioms rather than a relabeled noun list: raining cats and dogs, the elephant in the room, barking up the wrong tree. Select Phrases and sayings in the category picker and every card you deal is a full expression.

Phrases are the funniest round in the game because the drawer has to choose between the literal picture and the meaning, and the literal picture is almost always the winning move. They are also the hardest, so save them for a table that has warmed up rather than opening with them. A pictionary topic generator that only ever hands out objects will lose a room in twenty minutes; alternating a phrase round into the mix is what keeps a game going for two hours.

Pictionary word list generator: building a list to print

If you want a list rather than a game, this doubles as a pictionary word list generator: pick a category, deal through it, and every card you turn is one more line for your sheet. The counter tells you exactly how far through the bank you are, so you can stop at twenty or clear the category.

Most people asking for a word generator for pictionary actually want the printable version, so all 690 words are also published as plain, copyable lists you can read without dealing a single card. The full pictionary words list covers the everyday categories, and the specialist sets are linked further down.

Can you play pictionary online with this generator?

Partly, and it is worth being straight about which part. This is a word generator, not a shared drawing canvas: it deals the word, runs the clock, and keeps score, but the drawing happens wherever you already draw. To play pictionary online, put this on your phone, share your screen on the video call, and sketch in any whiteboard app, a notes app, or on real paper held up to the camera. Paper works better than people expect, and a pictionary game online needs nothing more than that.

The advantage of splitting it that way is that nothing has to load, sync or stay connected. The online pictionary generator runs entirely inside the browser that opened it, so a game keeps dealing even when someone's video drops out, and nobody needs an account. There is no pictionary word generator app to install either: the page is the app, and adding it to a home screen gives you the same thing without the download.

In the same room, the phone is simply the card deck. The drawer holds it face-in, reveals, draws, and passes it on. That is the mode this was built for.

What categories does the pictionary generator include?

Sixteen hand-checked banks rather than one scraped word dump, which is the difference between a round that works and a round where somebody has to draw the concept of governance. Choose one to keep the game themed, or leave it on Everything for a full mixed deck.

People and jobs35MediumPure visual stereotype, so no cultural knowledge is needed at all.

Sports30EasyEquipment and moves. Loud rounds, big gestures, zero ambiguity.
Movies and TV40HardTitles you can draw literally, so the picture does the work.
Hard mode55HardAbstract ideas with no obvious shape. The board game's Difficult card.
Funny45MediumWritten to make the drawing ridiculous. The screenshot bank.

Pictionary word lists you can read or print

Every word this generator deals is also printed as a real list. The main set of pictionary words covers the everyday categories sorted by type, the hard pictionary words list holds the abstract ideas and idioms for a table that has got too good, and the grown-up set of pictionary words for adults is written for a game night after the children are in bed.

Playing with young children? The pictionary words for kids list is banded by age and pre-read for a family table or a classroom. In December, Christmas pictionary words has its own bank. And if the argument is about the rules rather than the words, how to play pictionary settles it, including what the drawer is not allowed to do.

Prefer acting to drawing? The charades generator deals words for the mime version of the same evening, and the what to draw wheel hands out sketch prompts when nobody is guessing at all.

Fair questions

How do you use the pictionary word generator?
Pick a category and press DEAL. The card arrives face down, so turn the screen away from the guessers before you tap to reveal. The 60-second clock starts on the reveal. GUESSED IT scores the round and deals the next card; PASS moves on without scoring.
Is the pictionary generator free?
Yes, completely. No signup, no account, no trial, and no paywall on any category. It runs in your browser, so there is nothing to install and nothing to cancel.
Are the pictionary words really random?
Yes, and the method is checkable rather than asserted: draws use crypto.getRandomValues, the browser's own standard-defined generator, with rejection sampling so no slice of the bank is even slightly favored. Nothing about your device, the time, or previous rounds changes what comes up next.
How many pictionary words does the generator include?
690 across 16 categories, the largest being Christmas and Hard mode at 55 each and the smallest Nature and Sports at 30. The phrase bank adds 45 complete idioms on top of the single-word banks.
Can the generator deal phrases instead of single words?
Yes. Choosing Phrases and sayings swaps the whole deck for 45 complete idioms, and each is removed once played, so a long evening never repeats a saying. Give those rounds the 90-second timer: a phrase has more parts to build than a noun does.
Does the pictionary word generator work offline?
Yes, once the page has loaded. The words ship with the page rather than being fetched from a server, so it keeps dealing on a plane, in a basement, or anywhere the signal drops mid-game.
Is this the official Pictionary game?
No. Pictionary is a registered trademark of Mattel, Inc., and this site is not affiliated with or endorsed by them. This is a free word generator and timer for anyone playing a drawing-and-guessing game, whether or not they own the boxed version.
