Music genre wheel: spin the wheel of music genres
Press SPIN and the wheel hands you a random music genre: twelve genres load automatically, every one at an exactly equal chance, from pop and hip-hop to jazz and lo-fi. Use it to break a playlist rut, pick tonight's soundtrack, or run an aux battle, and the replay link proves the spin was chance, not taste.
Anything can win. That's the deal.

How does the random music genre generator work?
Twelve genres take one identical slice each, and the winner comes from a fresh random seed drawn from your browser's cryptographic source the moment you press SPIN. The seed rides inside the share link, so anyone can reopen your exact spin and watch it land on the same genre: proof the pick was fair, however loudly the car argues.
The list is yours. The × on a chip drops a genre you can't stand (no judgment, metal skippers), the box above types in anything from grime to Gregorian chant, and your edits save in your browser, not on a server. Call it a music genre wheel, a random music genre wheel, a random genre generator, or a wheel of genres music: same equal slices, one fair pick.
What music genres are on the wheel?
The default twelve cover the biggest types of music, wide enough that a spin can genuinely surprise you, familiar enough that you'll always find something to press play on. Think of it as the short music genres list, and every row of it is swappable:
| GENRE | ROOTS | IN ONE LINE |
|---|---|---|
| Pop | 1950s onward | Hooks first, always |
| Rock | 1950s | Guitars, drums, attitude |
| Hip-hop | 1970s New York | Rhymes over beats |
| Jazz | Early 1900s New Orleans | Improvisation as law |
| Classical | Centuries deep | Orchestras and patience |
| EDM | 1980s Chicago and Detroit | Build, drop, repeat |
| Country | 1920s American South | Three chords, true stories |
| R&B | 1940s | Groove under smooth vocals |
| Reggae | 1960s Jamaica | The offbeat rules |
| Metal | Late 1960s | Heavier than everything |
| Indie | 1980s | Small labels, big feelings |
| Lo-fi | 2010s streaming era | Beats to study to |
Spin the wheel: music genres for workouts, study, or an aux battle
Open Wheel settings and the quick fills reload the wheel for the moment: a workout set where EDM, metal, and drum & bass do the pushing; a study-and-chill wheel led by lo-fi and classical; or a party fill where reggaeton and Afrobeats carry the night. Some search it backwards, spin the wheel music genres, and land in the same place: this one.
The Aux battle fill turns the wheel into a party game. Spin a category, "one-hit wonder", "song that makes you cry", "guilty pleasure", then everyone queues the best track they've got for it and the room votes a winner. An aux battle wheel keeps the categories neutral so nobody accuses the host of spinning toward their own playlist, and the loser surrenders the aux cord.
What can you use a random music genre for?
The genre-a-week challenge is the classic: spin, then live inside whatever lands for seven days, one acclaimed album, one classic, one new release. Switch on "Remove the winner after each spin" in Wheel settings and the wheel walks you through all twelve with no repeats: three months of listening you'd never have chosen, which is exactly the point of asking it to pick a random genre of music for you.
Producers spin it to break writer's block and make a beat in whatever style lands. DJs use it to sketch sets that jump between styles of music on purpose. Road trips run it as law: each spin owns the speakers for thirty minutes, no vetoes at 70 miles an hour. And if the wheel says jazz, congratulations: you're growing tonight.
Fair questions
- Is the music genre wheel actually random?
- Yes. Every genre holds an exactly equal slice and each spin draws a fresh random seed the moment you press SPIN. The seed travels in the share link, so anyone can replay the exact spin and watch the same genre land.
- Can I add my own genres and subgenres?
- Yes, up to 52 entries: drop presets with the × on their chips and type anything in, from shoegaze to city pop. Your list saves in your browser, not on a server, so your wheel is set up the same way tomorrow night.
- What is an aux battle wheel?
- The party version of this wheel. Load the Aux battle quick fill in Wheel settings, spin a category like "guilty pleasure" or "one-hit wonder", and everyone plays their best song for it while the group votes. The wheel keeps categories neutral, so no one is steering the game toward their own library.
- How do I run a genre challenge without repeats?
- Turn on "Remove the winner after each spin" in Wheel settings: every genre that lands leaves the wheel, so twelve spins give you twelve different genres. One a week is a season of forced musical broadening.
- Can it pick an artist or a song instead of a genre?
- Type them in: the wheel spins whatever you load, so a wheel of your six favorite artists, tonight's karaoke shortlist, or a band's whole discography works exactly the same way, equal slices and all.
