What are good pictionary words?
A good pictionary word survives a bad drawing. That is the whole test, and it is stricter than it sounds. An elephant works because six confident lines get you there and nobody needs to be able to draw; the concept of loyalty does not, no matter how clever it feels when you write it on the slip. If you can picture the first three pen strokes before you have finished reading the word, it belongs on the list.
The second rule is the one groups forget: the guessers have to know it too. How many words for pictionary do you need?
About forty for an hour with six people, allowing for passes and the rounds where somebody gives up. Rather than counting slips, use a generator that removes each word after it is played: you never repeat one, you never run out mid-round, and nobody has to fold two hundred bits of paper before the guests arrive.

The numbers assume roughly half a minute of shuffling, arguing and laughing between rounds, which is honest rather than pessimistic. If your evening runs faster than that, you are playing with people who do not talk enough.
Which words should you keep off the list?
Four kinds of word ruin a round, and every one of them looks fine on paper:
- Anything spelled out. Brand names, acronyms, and made-up words all die the moment the drawer realizes they cannot write letters.
- Anything the room does not share. An inside joke is funny to four people and alienating to everyone else; a niche film is the same thing with extra steps.
- Anything with two ideas glued together. A word like carnival is fine; a phrase like the atmosphere at a carnival is two rounds fighting each other.
- Anything that only works if the drawer is good. If your word needs perspective and shading, you have written an art assignment, not a game.
Printable pictionary words: making your own deck
A homemade deck beats a phone in exactly one situation: a big group where the phone becomes a bottleneck. Copy the lists above into a document, set it to three columns, print, and cut along the columns. Card stock is worth it if you plan to play again, because ordinary paper shows the word through the back and the drawer's own team will absolutely notice.
Two practical touches. Write the category letter in the corner of each card the way the board game does, so a group can play mixed categories without shuffling three separate piles. And keep the difficult words on a different colored card, so you can hand a nervous player an easy one without anybody watching you do it.
