The World Cup Golden Boot goes to the player who scores the most goals at a single tournament. France's Just Fontaine set the bar in 1958 with 13 goals, a record that has stood for nearly 70 years and counting.

Across 22 tournaments from 1930 to 2022, the top-scorer total has ranged from 13 down to just 4. Here is every winner, with goals, and the records behind them.

What is the World Cup Golden Boot?

It is the award for the leading goalscorer of a single World Cup. The trophy has carried different names over the years, but the idea has never changed: whoever scores most across the tournament wins it. When players finish level on goals, recent editions separate them by assists and then by minutes played, so the Boot goes to one name.

What is the record for goals at one World Cup?

Just Fontaine's 13 goals in 1958, scored in only six matches, is the most anyone has managed at a single World Cup, and it has never been seriously threatened. Only two other players have reached double figures: Hungary's Sándor Kocsis with 11 in 1954, and Gerd Müller with 10 for West Germany in 1970.

Has the Golden Boot ever been shared?

Twice in telling fashion. In 1962 six players finished level on four goals each, the lowest winning total in World Cup history. In 1994 Bulgaria's Hristo Stoichkov and Russia's Oleg Salenko tied on six, and Salenko remains the only man to score five goals in one World Cup match.

Why do modern Golden Boots have fewer goals?

Scoring totals have fallen as defenses tightened and squads professionalized. Since 1990 the Golden Boot has been won with between 5 and 8 goals every time, a world away from Fontaine's 13. The recent high marks belong to Ronaldo (8 in 2002) and Mbappé (8 in 2022). For the all-time picture of titles, finals, and records, see our most World Cup wins guide and the all-time records page.

The 2026 Golden Boot is still wide open. So is the trophy:
