Have host countries ever won the World Cup?
Six times: Uruguay in 1930, Italy in 1934, England in 1966, West Germany in 1974, Argentina in 1978, and France in 1998. No host has won since, and with three co-hosts in 2026, Canada, Mexico, and the United States each get their own shot at ending that drought.
Who could join the winners' list in 2026?
Seven of the eight former champions qualified for 2026: Brazil, Germany, Argentina, Uruguay, France, England, and Spain. The exception is four-time winner Italy, who missed out. That leaves 41 teams chasing a first star, the widest-open field a World Cup has ever offered. The 48-team champion wheel gives every one of them an equal slice.
