The World Cup 2026 knockout stage opens with a Round of 32, the first time the tournament has had one. Thirty-two teams enter, and five single-elimination rounds later the champion is crowned at MetLife Stadium on July 19, 2026.
To win the World Cup from the Round of 32, a team has to win five knockout matches in a row: the Round of 32, the Round of 16, a quarter-final, a semi-final, and the final.
How many teams reach the knockout stage?
Thirty-two of the 48 teams advance from the groups, which is why the first knockout round is a Round of 32 rather than the old Round of 16. The twelve group winners and twelve runners-up qualify automatically, and the eight best third-placed teams take the remaining spots. The mechanics are broken down in our 48-team format guide.
What are the World Cup 2026 knockout rounds?
Five rounds carry 32 teams down to one champion, plus a third-place play-off between the beaten semi-finalists:
| ROUND | MATCHES | TEAMS |
|---|---|---|
| Round of 32 | 16 | 32 into 16 |
| Round of 16 | 8 | 16 into 8 |
| Quarter-finals | 4 | 8 into 4 |
| Semi-finals | 2 | 4 into 2 |
| Third-place play-off | 1 | the two losing semi-finalists |
| Final | 1 | 2 into 1 champion |
How does the knockout bracket work?
It is single elimination: win and you go through, lose and you go home. Each group's finishing position feeds a fixed slot in the bracket, so the route to the final is set before anyone knows who fills it. If a knockout match is level after 90 minutes it goes to extra time, and then to a penalty shoot-out if still tied. Exact pairings firm up as the group results and the best-third rankings are confirmed; the full schedule updates as each round is set.
How do the eight best third-placed teams qualify?
Each of the twelve groups sends its top two through, and then the twelve third-placed teams are ranked against each other on points, then goal difference, then goals scored. The best eight of those join the knockout stage; only the bottom four third-placed teams are eliminated. Want to feel it play out? The group predictor wheel spins once for the winner and once for the runner-up of any group.
