The 2026 World Cup is the biggest ever played: 48 teams in twelve groups of four, contesting 104 matches across Canada, Mexico, and the United States between June 11 and July 19, 2026.

The top two in every group advance, joined by the eight best third-placed teams, 32 survivors in all, feeding a brand-new knockout round: the Round of 32.

How many teams play at the 2026 World Cup?

48: sixteen more than any previous World Cup. Every edition from 1998 to 2022 had 32 teams; 2026 grows the field by half and, for the first time, splits hosting across three countries. The teams are drawn into twelve groups lettered A to L:

How does the group stage work?

Each team plays the other three in its group once: six matches per group, 72 across the stage, running June 11 to 27. A win is worth three points, a draw one, a defeat none. Where you finish in that little four-team table decides everything.

Who advances to the knockout rounds?

Thirty-two of the 48 teams survive the groups, which is why the first knockout round is a Round of 32 rather than the old Round of 16. It fills three ways:

  • The group winner advances automatically: twelve teams.
  • The runner-up in each group advances too: twelve more.
  • The eight best third-placed teams across all twelve groups take the final spots, ranked on points first, then goal difference, then goals scored.

So finishing third isn't the end: eight of the twelve third-placed teams live on. Only fourth place sends you home with no arithmetic to cling to. Want to feel how it plays out? The group predictor wheel spins twice per group: once for the winner, once for the runner-up.
