The World Cup 2026 third-place match is France vs England, played on Saturday, July 18, 2026 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. The two beaten semi-finalists meet for the bronze medals, one day before the final.
Who wins? Our free versus wheel gives France and England an exact half each and one spin calls it: no odds, no betting, and nothing leaving your browser. It is also a rematch of the 2022 quarter-final in which France knocked England out.
Who will win France vs England?
France or England, and there is barely anything between two of Europe's heavyweights. France are two-time world champions and were the 2022 runners-up; England won it in 1966 and have now reached back-to-back World Cup semi-finals. Both were beaten narrowly in the last four, France 2-0 by Spain and England 2-1 by Argentina, and both arrive in Miami wishing they were in Sunday's final instead. With no honest way to separate them, the wheel gives each an exact half: one spin calls the bronze medal. Spin the France vs England wheel.

FINAL JUL 19 AT METLIFE · THEN THE STORY IS COMPLETE
When and where is the World Cup 2026 third-place match?
Kickoff is 5 pm Eastern on Saturday, July 18, 2026 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, which is 21:00 UTC. The match time converter puts the kickoff in your own time zone, and the Hard Rock Stadium guide covers the venue, whose canopy shades 92% of the seats against the Florida sun. The next day, Spain play Argentina in the World Cup 2026 final at MetLife Stadium.
How did France and England reach the third-place match?
Both won their groups and then three knockout rounds before falling in the semi-finals. Neither had lost a match until the last four.
| STAGE | FRANCE | ENGLAND |
|---|---|---|
| Group finish | Group I winners, 9 pts, unbeaten | Group L winners, 7 pts, unbeaten |
| Round of 32 | Beat Sweden | Beat DR Congo |
| Round of 16 | Beat Paraguay 1-0 | Beat Mexico 3-2 |
| Quarter-final | Beat Morocco 2-0 | Beat Norway 2-1 after extra time |
| Semi-final | Lost to Spain 0-2 | Lost to Argentina 1-2 |
England's run was the harder road. Their quarter-final was the tie of the round, 120 minutes to end a Norway side that had just knocked out five-time champions Brazil, before Argentina edged them 2-1 in Atlanta. France cruised through the bottom half of the draw, beating Sweden, Paraguay and Morocco without conceding much, and only met their match in Spain, the tournament's meanest defense.
Have France and England met at a World Cup before?
Three times, and 2026 is their fourth World Cup meeting. England won both group-stage games in the 20th century; France won the one that mattered most, the 2022 quarter-final in Qatar. The full record:
| WORLD CUP | STAGE | RESULT |
|---|---|---|
| 1966 (England) | Group stage | England 2-0 France |
| 1982 (Spain) | Group stage | England 3-1 France |
| 2022 (Qatar) | Quarter-final | France 2-1 England |
The 2022 quarter-final in Al Khor is the freshest wound. Aurelien Tchouameni and Olivier Giroud scored for France, Harry Kane pulled one back from the penalty spot, and then Kane skied a second penalty late on that would have taken the tie to extra time. France went on to the final; England went home. The Miami play-off is the first time these two have met at a World Cup outside a group stage or a quarter-final, and the first time neither is playing for a place in the next round.
France vs England: World Cup records compared
France carry the heavier recent record: two titles to England's one, and a final as recently as 2022. England's single star is the oldest in the draw, and no England team has reached a World Cup final since the day they won it.
| RECORD | FRANCE | ENGLAND |
|---|---|---|
| World Cup appearances | 16 | 16 |
| Best finish | Champions (1998, 2018) | Champions (1966) |
| World Cup titles | 2 | 1 |
| Most recent final | 2022 (lost to Argentina on penalties) | 1966 (beat West Germany) |
| 2026 confederation | UEFA (Europe) | UEFA (Europe) |
| 2026 group | Group I | Group L |
Does the World Cup third-place match still matter?
It matters enough that a World Cup has staged one at every tournament since 1934; only the very first, in 1930, had no third-place play-off. The winner takes home the bronze medals and finishes the summer as the third-best team on earth, which is no small thing when 48 nations started. England know the fixture well from the wrong side: they lost the 2018 third-place match 2-0 to Belgium in St Petersburg. Recent play-offs have also been open, high-scoring games, freed from the fear of a final:
| WORLD CUP | THIRD-PLACE RESULT |
|---|---|
| 2010 (South Africa) | Germany 3-2 Uruguay |
| 2014 (Brazil) | Netherlands 3-0 Brazil |
| 2018 (Russia) | Belgium 2-0 England |
| 2022 (Qatar) | Croatia 2-1 Morocco |
What is each team's World Cup story?
France
France have won the World Cup twice, in 1998 at home and in 2018 in Russia, and reached a third final in 2022 before losing to Argentina on penalties. In 2026 they made the semi-finals again with a controlled, low-risk campaign, and only Spain could stop them. A win in Miami would be a small consolation and a third-place finish for the second time in their history. See the squad and every fixture on the France team page.
England
England won the World Cup once, at home in 1966, and have reached only four semi-finals in the 60 years since: 1990, 2018, and now back-to-back appearances that include 2026. This is a second third-place match in three tournaments after the 2018 loss to Belgium. Bronze would be the best World Cup finish England have managed abroad. See the squad and every fixture on the England team page.

France take one half of the wheel, England the other, and a single spin lands on a winner, like a coin toss you get to watch. Equal slices, no weighting, no odds, no betting: the result comes back as a shareable sticker, and the link bakes in the seed so your spin replays exactly for whoever opens it. When you are done here, call Sunday's World Cup 2026 final, Spain vs Argentina, or spin all 48 teams on the champion wheel.

- Who will win the World Cup 2026 third-place match?
- France or England, and it is genuinely close: France are two-time world champions and were 2022 runners-up, while England won it in 1966 and reached back-to-back semi-finals. France beat England in the 2022 quarter-final. Our free wheel gives each an equal 50-50 slice and one spin decides. No odds, no betting.
- When and where is the World Cup 2026 third-place match?
- On Saturday, July 18, 2026 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, kicking off at 5 pm Eastern, which is 21:00 UTC. It is the 103rd match of the tournament, the day before the final.
- Why do France and England play a third-place match?
- They are the two teams that lost in the semi-finals. France lost 2-0 to Spain and England lost 2-1 to Argentina, so instead of the final they meet in the third-place play-off to decide the bronze medals and who finishes third overall.
- Have France and England met at a World Cup before?
- Three times. England won the 1966 group game 2-0 and the 1982 group game 3-1, and France won the 2022 quarter-final in Qatar 2-1 on their way to the final. The 2026 third-place match is their fourth World Cup meeting.
- Does the World Cup third-place match go to penalties if it is a draw?
- Yes. A third-place play-off cannot be left level for the standings, so if the score is tied after 90 minutes the bronze medals are decided by a penalty shoot-out.
- Where can I get a printable World Cup 2026 bracket poster?
- The PlaySpinWheel poster pack is two print-ready PDFs for $5 on Gumroad: a complete-tournament poster with all 12 final group tables, and a knockout poster with the full bracket from the Round of 32 to the final at MetLife. The final-edition update lands right after July 19 and is included.
