Who wins France vs Spain? One spin of our free versus wheel calls it: France take an exact half, Spain take the other, with no odds, no betting, and nothing leaving your browser.
The first World Cup 2026 semi-final is on July 14, 2026 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. It is only the second time these two have met at a World Cup, and the last one, in 2006, is still sore in Spain.
Who will win France vs Spain?
France have won two World Cups, lost the last final on penalties, and are one win from a third consecutive final. Spain have won one, in 2010, and have not conceded a goal in the group stage of this tournament. Both came through their quarter-finals inside 90 minutes while the other half of the bracket needed extra time, so this is the semi-final between the two teams in the best rhythm. Which is exactly why nobody sensible is calling it, and why the wheel gives each of them one honest half. Spin the France vs Spain wheel.
When and where do France and Spain play?
Kickoff is 2 pm local time on Tuesday, July 14, 2026 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, which is 19:00 UTC. The winner reaches the final at MetLife Stadium on July 19; the loser plays the third-place match on July 18. The match time converter puts the kickoff in your own time zone, and the AT&T Stadium guide covers the venue: the Dallas Cowboys' 80,000-seat home, which hosts nine matches in 2026, more than anywhere else at the tournament.
How did France and Spain reach the semi-finals?
Neither has lost. France took a maximum nine points from Group I and have scored in every match; Spain won Group H with seven and kept three clean sheets in the group stage, conceding nothing at all before the knockouts.
| STAGE | FRANCE | SPAIN |
|---|---|---|
| Group finish | Group I winners, 9 pts, unbeaten | Group H winners, 7 pts, unbeaten |
| Group results | 3-1 Senegal, 3-0 Iraq, 4-1 Norway | 0-0 Cape Verde, 4-0 Saudi Arabia, 1-0 Uruguay |
| Group goals | 10 scored, 2 conceded | 5 scored, 0 conceded |
| Round of 32 | Beat Sweden | Beat Austria |
| Round of 16 | Beat Paraguay 1-0 | Beat Portugal 1-0 |
| Quarter-final | Beat Morocco 2-0 | Beat Belgium 2-1 |
France's quarter-final was a rematch of the 2022 semi-final, and ended the same way: 2-0, Morocco beaten again. Spain have won three straight knockout ties by a single goal, edging their Iberian neighbors Portugal 1-0 before seeing off Belgium 2-1 in Los Angeles.
Have France and Spain met at a World Cup before?
Once. They met in the Round of 16 on June 27, 2006, and Spain led it: David Villa converted a penalty on 28 minutes and Spain were the better team for half an hour. Then France scored three. Franck Ribery equalized on the stroke of half-time, Patrick Vieira headed France ahead late, and Zinedine Zidane finished it in stoppage time in what turned out to be his last World Cup run. France went on to beat Brazil, beat Portugal 1-0 in the semi-final, and lose the final to Italy on penalties.
| MINUTE | SCORER | SCORE |
|---|---|---|
| 28' | David Villa (penalty), Spain | Spain 1-0 |
| 41' | Franck Ribery, France | 1-1 |
| 83' | Patrick Vieira, France | 1-2 |
| 90+2' | Zinedine Zidane, France | 1-3 |
So the head-to-head at World Cups reads: played 1, France 1, Spain 0. Twenty years on, in Texas, Spain get the rematch at a higher stage. This is the first World Cup semi-final the two have ever played against each other.
France vs Spain: World Cup records compared
France carry the heavier recent record, two titles and back-to-back finals in 2018 and 2022. Spain's single star, won in South Africa in 2010, is the only major honor in a football culture that spent 80 years being told it underachieved.

What is each team's World Cup story?
France
France won at home in 1998, won again in Russia in 2018, and lost the 2022 final to Argentina on penalties after one of the great finals. Win in Arlington and they reach a third consecutive World Cup final, which almost nobody in the history of the tournament has done. They have also been here before in the least helpful way: France have lost World Cup semi-finals in 1958, 1982 and 1986, the 1982 defeat to West Germany in Seville still counting as one of football's cruelest nights. See the squad and every fixture on the France team page.
Spain
Spain have played only one World Cup semi-final in their history, and they won it: Carles Puyol's header beat Germany 1-0 in Durban in 2010 and took them to a first final, which Andres Iniesta settled in extra time. Before that, their best run was fourth place in 1950, in a tournament that ended with a round-robin rather than a knockout. That is the entire history of Spain in the final four, and it is why a semi-final still means something different in Madrid than it does in Paris.
